Freedom Now Suite’ I cried. In those cries, those sighs, that anger, there is so much more than a voice or a performer. There is the belonging, the anger and also the resignation of a people who have been forced into submission for centuries. A voice, Abbey’s, out of the chorus, without frills or embellishments, dry and proud of its diversity. An example for me and for those who approach the mystery of singing. This disc is intended as a small, due homage to this immense vocalist, composer and songwriter who, in my opinion, is somewhat underestimated and who undoubtedly deserves to be counted among the great singers of jazz!’
Lisa Manosperti LINER NOTES edited by Luigi Onori ‘Only two albums exist on the music and songwriting of Abbey Lincoln (1930-2010). Now a third has been added, conceived and realised by vocalist Lisa Manosperti. This homage to the Afro-American vocalist was born from the depths, from the need to ‘give voice’ to the libertarian and creative spirit of a woman who suffered and struggled in her own life, finally asserting herself with an innovative and extremely rich songbook (80 tracks), based on real and concrete experiences, on personal and collective life narrated through an extraordinary and cathartic storytelling and a vocal style that sculpts every single word. Thus Lisa Manosperti decided not to ‘remake’ Lincoln but to reread and interpret it with new arrangements in a happy and personal anthological choice that goes from 1959 to ‘98, favouring the mature decade of the “90 s French production Polygram/Verve under the aegis of Jean-Philippe Allard (who died prematurely in ”24). In the variety of structures and themes, thanks to the exceptional quartet, the vocalist maintains the original mood in the philosophical ‘Should’ve Been’ and the hymn-like ‘First Song’. Other tracks are mutated in terms of structure and impact, such as the dramatic ‘The World Is Falling Down’ and the narrative ‘Bird Alone’ (in trio) and the informal ‘Let Up’ in duo with Petrin; for ‘You Gotta Pay the Band’, still in trio, there is an authentic redefinition with the piece becoming very brief and fulminating, almost cabaret-like. ‘Straight Ahead’ loses the livid drama and becomes an anomalous ballad; “The Music Is the Magic” and “And It Supposed To Be Love” are effectively jazzed up. On two of Lincoln’s flagship tracks (‘Throw It Away’ and ‘Caged Bird’) a fast tempo and a Coltranian dimension are favoured, enhanced by Ottaviano and the quartet. But it is Lisa Manosperti’s voice that is convincing, because she has metabolised Lincoln’s lesson but does not imitate it, finding accents, intervals and personal sounds on Abbey’s wavelength, with a suffered sincerity.’ Luigi Onori   подробнее скрыть
